Primary Storage Configuration

Primary Storage Definition

Primary storage refers to the storage systems and technologies designed to hold digital information that users actively use. This data is regularly accessed by applications, hardware systems, and business users.

Which type of Storage ?

Nodeum identifies NAS and Cloud Storage as primary storage types.

Configuration Guide

Connecting Primary Storage to Nodeum

To facilitate the connection of your primary storage to Nodeum, follow these steps:

  1. Add Your Storage:

    • Navigate to: Settings > Hardware > Storages

  2. Create Your Target (For NAS and Cloud Storage):

    • Access: Storage Services > NAS Storage Services > Cloud

  3. Define Your Primary Storage Pool (For NAS and Cloud Storage):

    • Go to: Storage Services > Pool

Mounting Primary Storage with Nodeum

Nodeum ensures that primary storage is consistently mounted using two methods:

  1. Manual Mounting: Access the Console and click the mount button to initiate the process.

  2. Automated Workflow: Allow tasks to control the mounting process automatically when executed.

These two methods can be used simultaneously because they are independent. The first option is letting the workflow handle the parsing. When you select source entries in the task, the system will parse them recursively.

Storage Pool Status

  • On: The storage pool is online. The primary storage is mounted and accessible by Nodeum.

  • Off: The storage pool is offline. The primary storage is not mounted or accessible by Nodeum.

To change the status, click the button to mount the storage.

IIf the storage does not mount, you need to investigate the root cause.

Mount Option

For each NAS target you create, you can easily add specific mount options. A dropdown menu is available, providing various choices. One commonly used option specifies the chunk size for data transfer.

Primary Storage Parsing

1. Workflow Execution Parsing

  • Process: Parsing occurs during task creation and execution. It uses multithreading, enabling dynamic discovery of primary storage. With each execution, the system identifies newly stored data.

  • Benefits:

    • Provides an accurate overview of primary storage contents.

    • Prevents overloading storage with unnecessary discovery actions.

2. Inventory Parsing for "Unknown" Storage

  • Benefits:

    • Offers insights into primary storage without running data movement workflows.

    • Indexes content in the catalog and provides information through dashboards, trends, and reports.

    • Aids in strategic decision-making for data management and lifecycle configuration.

Once analyzed, these insights enable the next step of implementing data movement tasks.

Managing the Renaming of a Mount Point

When you need to rename a mount point, follow these steps:

  1. Create the new mount point.

  2. Unmount the previous mount point if it no longer exists on the Primary Storage.

  3. In the Console administration, delete the previous target that is not available on the Primary Storage.

  4. Delete the previous pool associated with the old target in the Console administration.

  5. Verify tasks to ensure they reference the correct pool.
